A 15-year-old boy named America, in the hospital after a suicide attempt, reluctantly recounts his past in his therapy sessions with Dr. B. Born to a crack-addicted mother, America was raised by Mrs. Harper, nanny of the wealthy foster family that gave up on him. Just before entering kindergarten, America visits his birth mother, who abandons him once again. He spends the next few years on the streets, before finding his way back to Mrs. Harper.
